Forest Pathology
In this module, you'll experience the processes involved in identifying tree disease pathogens. You will select samples of symptomatic tree tissues with our guidance in the field. The subsequent step involves isolating and cultivating the fungal pathogens from your collected samples. You'll engage directly in the scientific process, preparing growth media, extracting fungal DNA, and utilizing PCR techniques for sequencing. This approach will enable you to identify the pathogens at both the macroscopic and molecular levels.
You will have the opportunity to work independently on your samples, enhancing your learning experience. Through this process, you will not only identify but also characterize the pathogen, gaining a deeper understanding of its biology and impact.
Additionally, the module includes practical sessions on experimental infection methods in the greenhouse. Here, you'll learn to inoculate seedlings and evaluate symptom progression, offering a hands-on perspective on plant-pathogen interactions.
You are expected to maintain detailed records of your methodologies and observations, concluding in a comprehensive report that summarizes your research findings.
This module offers a mix of fieldwork, greenhouse activities, and laboratory work, along with scientific communication, all designed to engage and educate in the field of plant pathology.
These practical components are complemented by theoretical lectures, and students are provided with flexible time to work on their analyses and report writing, with our availability for feedback.
